Pros and Cons of Streaming Services and Cable TV Packages

Pros and Cons of Streaming Services and Cable TV Packages

There has always been this debate about which is better — streaming services or cable TV packages. Just to sift through the various service providers can be certainly overwhelming. You have to spend quite a bit of time to narrow down on your choice, consider the monthly expenses and the channels you would need regularly, etc., In order to help you in the process of deciding, here are some of the pros and cons of internet streaming services vs the cable TV option.

Affordability
There’s no comparing the pricing between these two service providers. Undoubtedly, streaming services offer some of the most competent rates. Netflix or Hulu for that matter offers a monthly subscription for just $10 as against an average cable package, which ranges anywhere between $90 to $105. Prices also fluctuate based on the resolution (high definition etc.,) and whether you would be streaming on multiple devices or not.

Flexibility
Streaming services are indeed far more flexible than cable TV packages. The latter locks the user into annual contracts that are enforceable under law. On the other hand, streaming services let you do as you fancy. You could take up their service or cancel it when the mood strikes you and you not even have to pay the termination fee. If you are someone who travels quite often, there is no way a cable TV package would suit you.

Customized Viewing
Streaming services make our viewing experience easy. They remind us of our favorite shows and also suggest new shows based on our viewing history. Besides, streaming services also offer shows that are no longer airing so you could throw your favorite party with friends and family and binge-watch all your favorites.

No Internet – no show
While the streaming services sound extremely enticing, remember you need high-speed internet to be able to watch anything uninterrupted. Therefore, you will have to factor a portion of the cost of high-speed internet towards streaming. Sometimes, high-speed internet is far more expensive than a regular one. Streaming service is also a “ruled out” option for those who live in remote areas of the country.

More shows on cable TV
There is no denying that cable TV offers endless channel options. If you have your favorite shows spread between 20+ channels, then it is always best to stick to cable TV package.

Sports
Live sporting events are usually not shown on streaming services. If you are a fan of sports or somebody who likes to watch some of the old matches, then it is best to stick to the sports channel package offered by the cable TV companies.

If you are still unable to decide between streaming service and cable, it is best you make a note of your favorite shows that air only on cable and not on streaming service.

Check if these shows are live-streamed by the respective channels. If they are, then you can just go with the purchase of streaming service. If they are not streamed online, the best thing would be to go for a customized package with cable TV service provider – where you pick only those channels you need and still have the streaming service subscribed. This way you can get the best of both the worlds.
