Type 2 Diabetes: Foods to Avoid

Type 2 Diabetes: Foods to Avoid

If you want to keep your blood sugar level in check, you have to be careful with the foods you consume and how often you consume them. There are also certain types of food that you should ideally limit or completely avoid to avoid any kind of complications. Here’s a compilation of them:

Sweets and soda
Any food that contains processed sugar must be totally avoided. Candy and soda are filled with processed sugar and have very low nutritional value to one’s health. To top it all, it also leads to weight gain. Refined carbohydrates like processed sugar increase blood sugar and the body produces an additional quantity of insulin to further lower the blood sugar levels. Insulin, on the other hand, is also a fat-storage hormone. With increased insulin quantity circulating in your bloodstream, the body converts the carbohydrates to fats and stores them in places like butt, abdomen and hips.

Bread and pasta
Anything that is made with white rice and white flour, including bread and pasta, is dangerous if you are a type 2 diabetic. When the process of digestion begins, the white carbs pretty much act like sugar and increase your blood glucose level. Instead of white carbs, consume whole-grain breads and resort to red, wild and bamboo rice which has a low glycaemic index.

Fatty cuts of meat
High-fat cuts of meat, such as hot dogs, sausage, bacon, ribs, ground beef and bologna are pretty much like full-fat dairy. They are high in saturated fats, which in turn increases cholesterol and also promotes inflammation in the body. This also puts a type 2 diabetic at a greater risk for heart-related diseases than any average person.

Packaged snacks
Junk food as they are rightly termed is replete with white flour, sodium, and other preservatives. Chips, pretzels, crackers, cookies and snack cakes have trans fats unless they specifically state otherwise. As a type 2 diabetic, one cannot afford even the minimal level of trans fat.

Most of us have a weakness for French fries, fried chicken and chips in general, but if you end up satisfying this craving – you would end up losing your health in the long run. There is nothing wrong with cheating once a month or so, but anything more than that is risky for all the major organs of your body. Fried foods soak up a lot of oil, which pretty much increases the calorie count. Fat takes a longer time to digest — this keeps the sugar at a higher level.

Alcohol
If you drink excessively and do not eat adequately, you could develop low sugar. Besides, the medication to control your sugar levels and the alcohol intake goes through the liver – which can be overwhelming for the organ to even process. The American Diabetic Association (ADA), recommends moderation in alcohol consumption. It recommends one serving per day for women and not more than two for men.
